SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - We at United Way California Capital Region and the broader Sacramento community are mourning the sudden loss of Joaquin Razo, a beloved East Sacramento resident, leader, mentor, volunteer and friend who passed away May 18 at age 39.
For more than a decade, Joaquin dedicated his time, leadership and heart to United Way, first as a staff member and later as a volunteer and board leader. Most recently, he served as chair of our Board of Directors, helping to guide our organization through a period of growth, collaboration and community impact.
Beyond United Way, Joaquin was widely respected across the region for his leadership and service. He served as chair of Metro EDGE in 2025 after more than a decade of involvement with the organization and was named Metro EDGE Young Professional of the Year in 2024. He also served on numerous nonprofit and alumni boards and was passionate about mentorship, leadership development and creating opportunities for others to grow.
But to those who knew him, Joaquin was far more than a title or role.
This past year, I had the opportunity to work closely alongside him, and I saw firsthand how deeply he cared about people and community. What I’ll remember most about Joaquin is how he made people feel. He was thoughtful, compassionate, funny and generous with his time. He was the kind of person who always made space for others, always making them feel welcomed, valued and heard.
Whether mentoring young professionals, lending his voice and talents to community events, volunteering for one more committee or simply showing up for others when they needed support, Joaquin led with kindness and humility.
I am still struggling to process this loss because someone as special as Joaquin leaves a lasting imprint on the people fortunate enough to know him. We will remember Joaquin not only for his leadership, but his warmth, humor, beautiful voice and generous spirit. His impact on this community, and the many lives he touched, will not be forgotten.
Information regarding services and ways to support Joaquin’s family will be shared as details become available.
