Draft Vision Zero Action Plan Outlines Path Toward Safer Streets

SACRAMENTO, CA (MPG) - After months of community outreach and engagement, the City of Sacramento is releasing the draft Vision Zero Action Plan Update for public review.
The draft plan reflects feedback from residents across Sacramento and outlines proposed strategies to reduce serious and fatal traffic crashes. Community members will have an opportunity to review the recommendations and provide comments from now through Aug. 17 before the plan is finalized.
Earlier this year, residents participated in workshops, neighborhood conversations, virtual meetings and an online survey to share their experiences and priorities related to transportation safety. The feedback gathered through those efforts helped shape the draft plan and its recommendations for improving safety on Sacramento streets.
“Transportation safety solutions are most effective when they are informed by the people who use our streets every day,” said Jennifer Donlon Wyant, Mobility and Sustainability Division manager. “The draft plan reflects what we heard from residents across Sacramento, and we encourage the community to review the recommendations and help us refine the final plan.”
The Vision Zero Action Plan serves as the city’s roadmap for eliminating traffic-related deaths and serious injuries. Sacramento adopted its first Vision Zero Action Plan in 2018 and is updating the document using the latest crash data, transportation safety analysis and community input.
The updated draft plan includes a refined High Injury Network – the small percentage of city streets where a disproportionate number of severe and fatal crashes occur – and recommended actions to improve safety for people walking, biking, rolling, taking transit and driving.
During the public review period, residents will be asked to provide feedback on proposed safety strategies, transportation safety priorities, updates to the High Injury Network and recommendations intended to address Sacramento’s most serious transportation safety challenges.
To gather additional input, the city will host four community workshops where residents can learn more about the draft plan, review proposed safety strategies and participate in discussions with project staff.
All workshops will be held from 5:30 to 7 p.m.
In-person workshops are scheduled as follows: July 1 at Robertson Community Center (3525 Norwood Ave.) and July 30 at La Familia’s Maple Neighborhood Center (3301 37th Ave.).
Registration is required for virtual workshops.
In addition to the workshops, residents can review the draft plan online at sacramento.konveio.com/vision-zero-action-plan-public-draft and submit comments throughout the public review period.
Vision Zero is an international traffic safety approach based on the principle that traffic deaths and serious injuries are preventable.
